Holistic Child Care: One Family’s Journey
Pregnancy today involves an overwhelming amount of choices. This film takes an in-depth look at one family and the holistic path they have chosen for raising their 2-year old daughter and the preparation for the birth of their second child. We journey with them as they parent their daughter, explore their birth options, make informed choices, celebrate their pregnancy, surround themselves with a supportive community, give birth and form an even closer family bond. So many choices were made by the Meara family that were shaped and influenced by their strong connection to their community. Because they had already given birth to one child at home with the assistance of a midwife, they were well educated and informed about alternative treatments, therapies, and ways of life. They also chose to seek regular check-ups with their family doctor, but their doctor visits supported and co-partnered the ‘Midwifery Model of Care.’

Today there are several choices available to woman and their families going through the process of pregnancy than many are aware of. For example, the family the documentary is about experienced laboring in the water with their first child and consequently desired that option to be available to them again. They also prepared themselves for laboring by utilizing breathing and dancing techniques they learned from yoga and belly dancing. They participated in herbal induction, a special chiropractic adjustment to turn baby and therapeutic techniques.

The Meara Family was grounded in community organizations such as McPherson Community Garden, United Natural Foods Coop, Tower Grove Farmers Market, the Skinker DeBaliviere neighborhood, where Sean Meara served as President of the Skinker DeBaliviere Community Counsel.

Their involvement with meetings, events and educational outreach programs such as Friends of Missouri Midwives (FoMM), the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN), La Leche League (LLL) along with many other programs which will be highlighted.  These choices, involvements, and support structures examine the diversity of this family’s child birthing experience and their lifestyle.

Lastly but perhaps most importantly will be to see the support they receive by their family and friends. They surround themselves with love and light and are also very active in their first child’s life. They have attended Waldorf programs at both Shining Rivers Waldorf School and Climbing Rose Nursery Kindergarten and have other structured social activities which you will learn more about. My short film is a parable. After spotting a quiet young beauty, a smitten amateur magician puts his not-so-polished trickery to work to gain her affection.

Luke 15:18-19 (NIV)
18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.’

In the part of the Prodigal Son verse I received, my main character is going to portray a lost man who is manipulative and searching for a way to make what he desires work to his advantage through his own self will. He continues to control every situation until at the very end it stops working for him but he doesn’t know how to let go. The girl throughout my story is someone who begins to see him as he really is but doesn’t give up on him and at the very end comes to him; he sees the glory in her and therefore sees the glory in himself. As a result, the last trick he tries to perform is a true success.
